Early Morning Ramblings

My little stinker decided that 5:00 am was the exact right time to practice her talking. She loves to babble away to herself in her crib, and I usually cherish the sounds...usually. :) I tried to go back to sleep now that she's snoozing away again, but I keep thinking about things to do, so now I'm up watching Morning Joe on MSNBC and blogging so as to avoid all the things I "have" to do today. (They're doing coverage of the Princess Diana memorial...and may I say that those princes are sure nice looking young men.) :)

I also wanted to vent for a sec about the issue I wrote about a few days ago that we're dealing with concerning my husband's little brother. He had a birthday party on Sunday, and we were really nervous about taking Lily over there after what happened with him taunting her about being adopted and blah, blah, blah. Well, there was none of that this time, but he was SO rough with her. He kept grabbing her arms, and I'd tell him to stop three or more times before he would. We finally just kept her away from him. As we were leaving, she was in her carseat and was admittedly being a touch grouchy ( I would be, too, after being manhandled by an obnoxious kid), and he knelt down and SCREAMED into her face. it freaked her out so bad and took us a few minutes to get her calmed down. I thought my husband was going to put him through a window. It's so upsetting because he is family, but it's to the point where I don't want her anywhere near him. My husband talked to his dad about it, but the entire thing was totally dismissed as "too much sugar." I'm really not so sure. It's a touch too much psycho for me. What do you do when parents won't discipline their kid and it impacts your kid?

In happy "couple" news, Lily spent the night last weekend with her grandparents and gave us a night totally to ourselves. I had nearly forgotten what it was like to dress up and be just me for awhile. It reminded me how important it is to get away for awhile and not to be "mommy" all the time. It's tough for me not to be on Lily-patrol 24/7, but I'm realizing more and more that I need it, my husband needs it, and Lily needs it! I want her to be comfortable with other people, and I want some of my life back. I think we're going to plan a small weekend getaway this fall for our anniversary. I'm really looking forward to it. Any location recommendations?

Hey Katd, so glad you enjoyed an evening with your hubby. I think it is really important to do that as often as you can.

Izzy is going to my parents tonight so DH and I can celebrate our 4th anniversary which is today.

Um, yes, I think I agree with you about little bro. Too much psycho!

"Too much sugar?!" Puhleese!!!

I would be concerned about his behavior since he is 7 (maybe 8 now). If he was 2-3 I might feel a little different but he was rough AFTER you'd told him not to be...so he understands that he isn't suppose to be rough with a baby but is doing it anyway.
There are at the very least some serious issues with jealousy that need to be dealt with...and maybe more.

I too would be very frustrated that his behavior is being seen as "too much sugar" instead of a behavior in need of correction.

I know this situation is difficult since this is family so you can't just cut ties and it is difficult to limit time with them.

I think I would just have to be firm and tell little bro that if he is going to be rough with the baby, he isn't going to be able to play with her. And we NEVER scream at babies!!! If that doesn't work, then it might be time to have a difficult conversation with his parents. Never fun but may be necessary.

Getting away with your husband every now and then is so good for your marriage! We are about to celebrate 13 years in October and we have always gone on a "just us" trip every year or so. Never longer than 4 or 5 days but it has been the best thing that we could possibly have done for our marriage!

Sorry about the ongoing problems with little bro. He does need to be set straight. That behavior can't be helping him in the rest of his life either (school, etc)

I'm glad you had some "me" time.

Suggestions for a getaway . . . Hmmm . . . how far do you want to travel? I have lots of suggestions! I really like to go to the beach after the crowds leave. If you're lucky you'll still get some gorgeous weather and if not, you'll hopefully just get lucky!

I agree with the others, little bro needs to be dealt with. I know that in the past, I've found it hard to deal with someone elses child being agressive with Sweet Pea but at some point, you just have to take control and do the parenting yourself. Because it's apparent that nobody else is going to.

Glad to hear you are getting away for a weekend. We've done a night here and one weekend. Is is awesome! No suggestions on spots tho.

that kid does seem psycho. what do do? don't go over there, maybe? is that possible or would that cause family fireworks?

Hmm. Not good. I think I'd be busy, or Lily would be not be "feeling well" the next time there is a family get together. If you don't want to do that - then pull a Melissa & lay it on thick & stern! He'll/they'll get over it. Your baby. You call the shots. Period.

Glad you enjoyed your night off! We have no one to watch our kids, so we never have a night off. I'm glad others are so blessed! :)
