Have you SEEN this? I love more than anything to watch Morning Joe on MSNBC when I wake up. This morning, I read this on the ticker:
CANBERRA, Australia - An Australian woman who gave birth to twins instead of a single baby after receiving in-vitro fertilization has sued her doctor for the cost of bringing up the second child.
The woman, who cannot be identified because of a court order, is seeking more than 400,000 Australian dollars (US $332,000) to cover the expense of raising one child until age 21.
Testifying in the Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory on Tuesday, the 40-year-old mother said she told her doctor, Robert Armellin, that she only wanted one child. But an embryologist under the doctor's supervision implanted two embryos in her uterus, resulting in the birth of non-identical twin girls.
The woman told the court that she and her partner were devastated when they learned she was carrying twins, and had even considered putting one of the babies up for adoption.
She said that while she enjoyed some aspects of her pregnancy, such as decorating the girls' nursery, other parts were distressing, including purchasing a stroller, or pram.
"It was like the last frontier of acceptance to spend hundreds of dollars on a pram," she said.
The couple, whose combined income exceeds A$100,000 (US $82,875), are seeking A$398,000 (US $329,000) to cover the costs of raising one of the girls, including private school fees. They also want around A$15,000 (US $12,427) to compensate them for time off work and medical expenses.
Okay, I can understand being upset if you said specifically to implant just one, but as someone who once prayed and hoped so hard for a baby, I can't IMAGINE suing the doctor because I had twins. And going in for IVF and then wanting to place one for adoption? Why does this make me SO furious? I don't know, but it does. Seriously, I'm so angry about it. It seems so ridiculous to me. I'll adopt your "extra" baby, lady.

I'd gladly adopt them both.
I hope she loses this case. It would be so bad for IVF everywhere if she won.
Our RE made us sign a consent saying that we recognized multiples as a possibility. That is just ridiculous. Although I do wonder why the Dr transfered 2 when she said she wanted only 1 transfer. I just can't imagine not be thrilled about both of those little girls
Hmm- that is really odd!! Sounds like someone just trying to make a buck off the RE. I am sure she's signed some consents somewhere saying that she realized multiples were a possibility, even with only a one-embryo transfer (embryos have been known to split).
GRR!
This irritates me so much that I can't even respond. It is a good thing she lives in Australia or I might have to make the trip to her house just to pop her upside the head....what an idiot!

CRAZY!!! wow. yeah, i hope there's paperwork signed so there's no way she wins. that poor child! can you imagine growing up and finding out that your own mother sued because she didn't want you? i'm furious too!
That has got to be one of the most ridiculous things i have ever heard! People just kill me sometimes!!!!!!
What an ungreatful women!!!!
Greedy, greedy, greedy, in all sort of ways.
K, that's not even cool. Makes me nauseous thinking about the "other" poor little girl.
Exactly what you said, I'll take your "extra" baby. Give me a break. Does she only see her daughters as money symbols? What they'll cost, not who they are???
After 10 years of ttc, 6 IVF's, sometimes transfering up to 4 embrios,my arms are still empty.
Twins would have been a miricle.
This makes me sad and angry at the same time! UGH!!
good grief! This is just not the kind of thing I needed to read about today. I can't believe the nerve of some people!
Re-freaking-diculous!
Guess we're not the only sue-happy nation on the planet.
This is beyond ridiculous. Would she have sued if the IVF hadn't taken? Did she understand she was doing a sure thing? That under going IVF isn't like ordering at the drive thru? Seriously, if she's irked at the idea of spending the cash on a pram, can you imagine her ire when it turns out one of the girls needs, say, special formula? What an inconvenience. I could go on and on....-
Im just wondering what her 'unwanted' daughter is going to think when she grows up and reads about this?????
How pathetically sad...
g.
I can't even post a thing right now becaue that is so upsetting. Twins are so much fun and that's just awful that all she can think about is how much it's going to cost instead of how much of a blessing it is. UGH!!
ARGH!!!!! That's it. That's all i can say right now...just ARGHH!!!!!
And maybe selfish, greedy..i'll just stick with ARGH!!!!
there are stupid people everywhere.
It just makes me so sad.
I saw you off of Mayhem, hope my commenting is okay.
Horrible, isn't it?
No kidding. I'd adopt one of them. How freakin' rediculous. No self respecting infertile would seriously consider putting one of their children up for adoption. Ugggghhh....freakin' makes me furious!
I agree! Furious! I hate to say this, but you DO HAVE the CHOICE to eliminate. My doctor had a BIG talk with us about really considering multiple children because the added stress could hurt me because of my MS. I can't believe you would go to the trouble to do IVF and not be thrilled. I cannot IMAGINE NOT being thrilled.
HOW ON EARTH could she even consider putting one of the babies up for adoption. How would she choose which one to keep...how selfish!! Would she pick the one she believed was cuter? Or didn't cry as much? That's SICK. And to separate them like that. I know adoption is a very personal choice for the birthmother, and it's certainly her right, but this whole story smacks of greed.
Aargh.
